What Do the Different Styles of Round Flues Look Like?

Compare your flue with the illustrations below to determine which type or style of round flue you have. Then you will be sure you are selecting an appropriate chimney cap. Also noted are the specific models of chimney caps appropriate for each type of flue.

To the left is a cut-away illustration of a Double Wall Air Cooled flue, also known as an Double Wall Air Insulated flue. These have one pipe inside another. Air circulates in the open space between the two pipes to cool the flue. Click here to see Weathershield, or  Vacu-Stack caps appropriate for Double Wall Air Cooled (Air Insulated) chimneys. Exhausto Fans are also appropriate if you also buy a Air Cooled Adaptor.

Triple Wall Air Cooled flues, also called Triple Wall Air Insulated flues, as shown in the cut-away illustration to the left, have three concentric piles. Cooling air circulates in the open spaces both between the outermost and middle pipe and between the middle pipe and innermost pipe. Click here to see Weathershield, or  Vacu-Stack caps appropriate for Triple Wall Air Cooled (Air Insulated) chimneys. Exhausto Fans are also appropriate if you also buy a Air Cooled Adaptor.

Insulation within the flue distinguishes a Solid Pack flue, also called a Double Wall Insulated or Solid Packed Insulated flue. In many, the actual insulation in covered, as shown in the cut-away illustration to the left, and, therefore, not visible as you look down into your flue.  Click here to see Vacu-Stack, HomeSaver Pro Guardian, Weathershield, chimney caps appropriate for Double Walled Insulated (Solid Packed) chimneys. Exhausto Fans are also appropriate Double Walled Insulated (Solid Packed) chimneys, but be sure also to purchase the Solid Pack Adaptor that goes with the Exhausto Fan you select.

Can you actually see insulation between the pipes of your flue as in the cut-away diagram to the left? Then you have an Exposed Insulation Solid Pack flue. You will need this style of Vacu-Stack chimney cap for Exposed Insulation Solid Pack flues.

This is a Flexible Metal Flue Liner. Select a chimney cap with a base that inserts INTO this type of flue such as Copper Tops, Slip-In Forever Caps, HomeSaver Pros, and Exhausto Fans.
